P1: Case Study - Assessing Daylight & Thermal Comfort at Modern Houses
In groups of 6, students are tasked to select 1 space each factor focusing on daylight and thermal comfort factors. Based on the identified issues and data collections, students will then propose passive design ideas to tackle and improve the condition for both daylighting and thermal comfort.
Tasks
In a group of 5-6, students are required to:
STAGE 1 - IDENTIFY SPACES
- Select ONE type of house
- Select ONE space each related to these issues (i) Daylighting (ii) Thermal comfort
- Identify issues of the selected space
STAGE 2 - DATA COLLECTION
- Get secondary data
- Conduct data collection in terms of Daylighting and Thermal comfort
(i) Daylighting
- record lux reading using smart phone app
- using gridlines drawn on the floor layout
- ensure all openings are opened
- take 3 times a day (9am, 1pm, 6pm)
(ii) Thermal comfort
- measure 5 times a day (7am, 10am, 2pm, 6pm, 9pm)
- one point of the chosen space
- ensure all openings are opened
STAGE 3 - IDEATION
- implementing passive design to improve (i) Daylighting & (ii) Thermal comfort
- relevant drawings & sketches to support ideas
- come out with a set of orthographic drawings
Progress
upon creating a google drive organizing the information needed, we then proceed to finalize our space. After finalizing the spaces, we divided 2 members to perform data collection on site, 2 members to prepare orthographic drawings and one member planning the layout of the 2 A2 presentation boards.
Once the data is completed, 2 members are in charge of coming out with initial ideas and draft sketches of the passive design ideas, while the rest of the 3 members do research that supports the initial ideas. Those ideas are then refined by the discussion and research done as a group.
Several meetings were carried out hybrid, online and physical to discuss about the problems identified as well as solving and improving the information of the findings upon the comment from the tutors.
Upon finishing the passive design ideas, 1 member then compiles all of the information and arrange them into the slides before submission.
Reflection
Upon finishing this assignment, I was shocked that I have learned so many new concepts and knowledge about designing passively and creatively.
This project has really helped me to think outside of the box in terms of coming out with interesting and passive design ideas and designing the layout of the presentation board.
CRITICAL & CREATIVE THINKING SKILLS
In terms of teamworking, it has really enhanced my ability to initiate communication within the group when it comes to meetings and discussion.
COMMUNICATION SKILLS
Having to manage the design and layout of the presentation board, it has really helped me to expose myself into several design software such as (canva, ibispaint, etc.)
